On-site Safety Representatives Sarah Pike and Donovan Tilk have completed the requirements for national certification as a Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC). The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) awards this certification to individuals who meet the rigorous experience and education requirements, including passing a comprehensive examination. The examination covers the body of knowledge supervisors must have to carry-out their safety-related supervisory responsibilities and includes subjects such as hazard recognition and analysis, personal protective equipment, regulatory compliance and incident investigations.

The STSC certification is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. Those who earn the STSC Certification are recognized as having met demanding, peer-established competency requirements in supervision. A STSC must recertify every five years to maintain this certification.

The STSC certification program is operated by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). Established in 1969, BCSP has nationally recognized credentials in the safety, health, and environment accredited professional and para-professional certifications. The BCSP is located in Champaign, Illinois.

Many people around the world are using October as a time to reflect and bring awareness to Breast Cancer. According to breastcancer.org, about 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. We can all probably list five people we know who have had this evil disease at one point in their life. It is also the most common cancer among women and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Several organizations are devoted to finding a cure for cancer including Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Cancer Research Institute, and the American Cancer Society, just to name a few.

Going back to the alarming 1 in 8 women statistic, we would like to highlight our very own Teresa Pulley, who is a breast cancer survivor. Teresa is the office manager at our Kentucky office and has been employed with Robinson since 2006. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and announced she was cancer free in 2014. One charitable organization that Teresa says has helped her and her family tremendously from the time she was diagnosed is the American Cancer Society. “They provided much needed literature to keep me informed about what to expect, side effects, and local support groups,” said Teresa. She also mentioned that the Brown Cancer Center in Louisville, Kentucky has a section specifically for women who have lost (or will lose) their hair. “They provide free wigs, scarves, head wraps, and hats, as well as classes for other self-image issues such as make-up and clothing, which really helps with the mental aspect of dealing with cancer.” Teresa is proud to announce that today she is 4 ½ years cancer free!

Cancer, no matter the type, is an evil disease, so today and every day, we remember those who have been diagnosed, those who have survived, and those who have lost their battle.

Robinson Construction Company has recently earned status as a RAVS Plus Contractor by ISNetworld (ISN), the global leader in contractor and supplier management. RAVS (Review and Verification Services) Plus is an audit tool recently implemented by ISN that enables them to determine the validity of questions answered and documentation uploaded into a contractor’s account. To achieve this status, ISNetworld RAVS Plus conducted face-to-face interviews with Robinson field personnel to determine the company’s actual safety practices and ensure that employees have the competencies, training, and qualifications required to perform their specified job duties. According to Robinson Corporate Safety Director Eugene Besand, “ISN allows us to easily report and update our qualifications with our current ISN clients. It also affords us the opportunity to gain new clients.” Robinson is prequalified with more than 15 clients at nearly 50 different site locations through ISN. ISN currently supports over 550 Hiring Clients and 70,000 contractors and suppliers. Only 2% of those 70,000 contractors have achieved RAVS Plus Contractor status with ISN. “Anyone can click a button or submit a written document that satisfies safety requirements, but what does that prove? Achieving RAVS Plus status is proof that Robinson has a valid safety infrastructure.”

About ISNetworld:

ISN helps connect qualified contractors and suppliers with Hiring Clients around the globe. They collect self-reported information from contractors and suppliers based on regulatory and Hiring Client-specific requirements, and maintain it in one centralized platform. ISN’s Review and Verification Services (RAVS) Team reviews this self-reported information against Hiring Client standards and applicable regulatory requirements. The information is consolidated in ISNetworld, helping Hiring Clients connect with safe, qualified contractors and improve workplace safety around the globe.

Superintendent Bruce Gibbar was recently recognized by a long-time Robinson customer as a “leader in safety.” A letter from the customer states:

“I am writing to thank you for your efforts in achieving three years without a contractor lost time accident on our [jobsite]. In May, thousands of contractor hours have been registered on our site without a lost time incident. The on-site team routinely demonstrates a clear understanding of, and commitment to safety. In many cases, that partnership has led to us improving safety performance together.

Our leadership team determined that a cornerstone of our successful partnership here has to do with the Leadership in Safety demonstrated by your on-site leader, Bruce Gibbar. His contributions to safety go beyond looking after his own crews, to our extended teams, as well as other contractors and visitors. He has been effective in meeting [our] reporting standards, root cause safety problem solving, and takes swift action where safety is concerned. It is truly a pleasure to work with a professional like Bruce.

Additionally, we congratulate and thank your entire organization for demonstrating the high level of commitment to keeping people safe, and to reaching this three year milestone on [our site]. We look forward to our continued, successful partnership in safety.”

Bruce was presented with the letter and a plaque by Robinson CEO Frank Robinson at the June Supervisor’s Meeting. Bruce was grateful that he was chosen to receive the award, but believes safety is a group effort. “This doesn’t just belong to me. We should really have 200 of these plaques because it’s a group effort and we all had a part in making this happen.”

Congratulations to Bruce and his entire team on this great accomplishment!
